"I think records were just a little bubble through time and those who made a living from them for a while were lucky. There is no reason why anyone should have made so much money from selling records except that everything was right for this period of time…It was a bit like if you had a source of whale blubber in the 1840s and it could be used as fuel. Before gas came along, if you traded in whale blubber, you were the richest man on Earth. Then gas came along and you’d be stuck with your whale blubber."

Tonight marks the first time each of my top played artists on Last.fm are ones I genuinely love.

Though I do a piss poor job of ensuring most of what I listen to gets scrobbled, and if that weren’t the case I’d imagine this wouldn’t be such a milestone.

Bullion - Say Goodbye To What
via: Asian Dan

If you’ve never heard of Bullion, allow me to recommend you start where the rest of us started: his homage to the late J Dilla in the form of a Beach Boys remix album/mixtape, Pet Sounds: Songs in the Key of Dee. It’s not as if you’d be missing anything contextually by listening to his later original tracks first, it’s just that “Pet Sounds” is fucking brilliant, and having read this far you’d be doing yourself a disservice to not give it a listen.

Next try the Young Heartache EP on for size; at this point it should start to become apparent that this kid — and he is a kid, babyfaced little British chap who looks nothing like the hip hop mastermind he’s becoming — has a level of control over his samples rivaled by few, and an ability to marry genres in a way that’s just dumbfounding.

And if you already knew all those things, here’s another song of his to obsess over.

Reblogging this picture because I like it so much that I want it to be one of the things to find out about me some time from now when, I pray, there’s sufficient motivation for others to give a shit.

One of those tumblrs that posts pictures of pretty ladies in various states of undress in the name of art or fashion or some other fucking thing just lobbed three interesting pictures across the bow of my dashboard.

Interesting because they’re of a friend and former co-worker who I haven’t seen much of in the last two years, but now I’ve seen two instances of what it looks like when she wears her hair down over her shoulders as a shirt. (Link almost certainly not safe for work, coffee shops, co-working facilities, libraries, browsing Tumblr while doing a bit of laundry at Mom & Dad’s, or, in my case, unsuspecting friends.)

In fairness to Tumblr’s half-naked lady awareness community and its erection based economy, the pictures were originally posted on lastnightsparty.whatever, which exists in it’s own strata of hipster perversion. She’s spent the last several years working for a monolithic fashion rag (parent company rhymes with flambé blast) and a few fashion houses, so I don’t find myself at all surprised that she’d be running in the same circles as that fancy gentleman with the perm who finds himself so capable of getting girls to take their shirts off so he can photograph them and go all PIXORITDINTHAPPEN online, apparently with none of the Joe Francis-esque stigma one might expect. Furthermore she’s a big girl and she can do what she likes.

Nevertheless, the internet is a weird fucking place.

Reblogging this having read none of these articles, and not expecting much more than what’s now been established as the standard “end of decade” fare, merely on the strength of the illustrations. SO good.

“Heaven Can Wait” by Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nosaj Thing remix)

Nosaj Thing remixes are rarely imperfect. Jason Chung has the uncanny ability to pull out the most gorgeous, haunting elements of any given song and breathe life into them, often turning them into lonely, exquisite dance tracks that ruminate in your ears for moments long after the night has ended.

I’m Reblogging this as hard as I can.

Other things Jason is good at: Modesty. Deadpan. Sensible attire. And murdering it at Low End Theory, and sometimes at other places too.
